I know it's not what you are looking for, but a workaround is that when you store a document anything you type in the description box is searchable. so if you upload insurance paperwork and make it a rule to enter the claim number in the box then that claim number is searchable.

This is exactly what the budget tracks, you can create a template to make it even easier then just go fill in the costs as they occur and add in the revenue when complete.

You can do this and we do it all the time. You just can't do when you are adding a line, add the line first with a $0 amount and then change it to a negative number. It helps to create a template with a bunch of line items with a place holder like X or "material" and then you just edit the budget as you go with actual vendor/amount.

This is especially a problem when you sync your software with Quickbooks! Please JN make this possible ASAP. I hate the EVERYONE can just add products to anything they touch!

I don't understand why Budgets seem to be the one area of JN that are set up completely different from every other functionality of JN (like Estimates, MO, WO, etc) on all other areas you can see what was actually changed in the system activity, you can have multiple templates, you can see a pdf of the document, etc.
Budgets are literally one of the most important documents relating to profitability of the job and the salesman's commissions and it is the one area that can be changed with NO audit trail of what was changed.
